A sound film is a motion picture with synchronized sound or sound technologically coupled to image, as opposed to a silent film. Sound of a film often refers to the sound track that comprises of the entire audio portion of a film, video or television production, including effects and dialog.
The director of audiography or sound director is responsible for the sound in a film. He creates new sounds and enhances the aural feel of the film with the help of foley artists. He is responsible for the development and augmentation of all soundtrack material, or a significant portion thereof and is ultimately in charge of the entire sound production. A Foley artist is the person who creates and records many of the sound effects for a film.

The sound track of a film is the work of a team of artists and technicians comprising of: o Sound designer: Is in charge of the post-production sound of a movie. Sometimes this may involve great creative license, and other times it may simply mean working with the director and editor to balance the sound to their liking. o Production sound mixer: Heads the sound department on set and is responsible for recording all sound during filming. His responsibilities involve choice and deployment of microphones, choice of recording media and mixing of audio signals in real time. He arrives on location with his own equipment which includes microphones, radio systems, booms, mixing desk, audio storage, headphones, cables and tools. They are required to capture a wide variety of sound on location. o Boom operator: Is an assistant to the production sound mixer and is responsible for microphone placement and movement during filming. o Sound editor: He is responsible for assembling and editing all the sound effects in a sound track. o Re-recording mixer: Balances all the sounds prepared by the dialogue, music and effects director. He is responsible for finalizing the films audio track. o Foley artists: They create many of the natural and everyday sound effects in a film which are recorded during a session with a recording engineer. The sounds of galloping horses, of punching someone, of high heels are some examples of the sounds effects that are created by foley artists. o Music supervisor: Creates and integrates the music of a film with the help of mixers, composers and editors. o Composer: Is responsible for writing the musical score of a film.
Creativity is the basic requirement to be a sound designer or sound director. Information technology skills are also required digital recording and editing are the norm now. The candidates should also have a flexible and adaptable attitude as they may be required to work on a tight schedule to meet deadlines.

To enter the industry one needs a technical degree or diploma. At the entry level people are hired as apprentice editorial assistants and work their way up to more skilled jobs. Employers in the motion picture industry usually hire experienced freelance technicians on a picture-by-picture basis. Reputation and determination are important in getting jobs.
